Origins of the
Dawson name
|
This is a
baptismal name meaning 'son of David' from the nickname Daw or Dow.
The
earliest nickname would have been Daud. The name can also be seen as
Dowson and ancient records from 1379 refer to Johannes Dauson and
Robertus Dauson.
In some
villages a variety of spellings occur even from obviously related
persons.
George
Mercer Dawson, 1849 - 1901, was born in Picton, Nova Scotia. He was a
geologist who did much to pioneer work in British Columbia and the
Yukon where Dawson City took his name.
Thomas
Dawson, 1811 - 1878, was a well known landscape painter and in his
early days was employed in the lace making industry. Many useful
inventions for the development of that industry are also attributed to
him.
